Teaching Philosophy
I recognize that teaching is one of the most important keys to creating life -long learners that will have the ability and the passion for learning, and for them to develop the 21st-century skill that includes communication, collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking skills which will result in creating good and independent leaders. In my opinion, a good teacher is a teacher that is organized, flexible, critically reflect on her teaching and seeks for improvement and most importantly to be professional. Moreover, a good teacher should create a safe environment for the learners, give learners the chance to speak and express themselves, and guide the learners through their learning journey.
I believe that having a good relationship with the students is one of the essential components that leads to good and successful teaching and helps in building the students personality and confidence. For example, in the beginning of each teaching practice, I start building my relationship with the students by being friendly and strict on the same time. I would give them a chance to speak and express their opinions which will increase their confidence to speak in English, but at the same time, I would stop any misbehaviors and attitude that can affect the learning and the classroom environment. Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs state that love and belongingness are one of the five needs that children should have to be confident and independent, so as teacher I can provide it by building a good relationship (Maslow, 2013). As a result of that students may improve their behavior and develop their performance and participation in the classroom, which I have noticed during my teaching practices.
I strongly believe that communication is another key component that supported me as a teacher to improve my teaching skills as well as scaffolding and expanding students learning. In other words, a teacher cannot build her relationship with the students without communication as it can strength the relationship between the teacher and the students. An example of communication in the classroom is dialogue; which can increase students’ performance and the teacher communication skill that delivers the lesson content to the students effectively. In my teaching practices, I have dialogue with the students about the lesson topic to help me to know the students’ prior knowledge, ability, and level in the subject.
In my view, I believe that having a variety of teaching methodologies and strategies is important to create long life learners. Some of the teaching methodologies that I always use is assessment, differentiation, and visual learning. Firstly, I believe that assessment is one of the important strategies to scaffold students learning and to know about my strengths and weakness in teaching. Secondly, differentiation as I can have different methods to teach students differently to meet the students’ needs and help them in improving their level (Tomlinson, 2016).In addition, differentiation by product is one way that I can differentiate with as I give the students a choice to create their products. Thirdly, I believe visual learning which is a very effective method to introduce new concepts for the students and engage them in the lesson; as it something that can attract their attention which I always use during my teaching practices. Such as using video to introduce the lesson.
Finally, I believe that an effective teacher should always increase her knowledge about education and teaching strategies to be able to teach and deal with different students with different personalities. Besides, as a teacher, it motivates me to see my students develop and improve their learning through using the new methodologies. In the future, I aim to create an enjoyable and interesting classroom environment for the students to learn in and to create collaborative learning opportunities for the students to learn in.
