Monitoring and Assessment ​

I believe that monitoring and assessments are for the teacher to use summative and formative assessment to assess and evaluate the student level and performance in the subject. “The main purpose of assessment is to enhance learning and enable the reporting of students’ achievement” (Department of Education, 2016). In which it’s important for teachers as they have to assess the students learning to scaffold them and support them in improving their learning level

Assessment strategies 

During teaching practice, I would use checklist and notebook to record some note related to student performance in the class to plan some activities to help them in developing their English skills. Also when I checked their writing, I wrote some notes about the students to scaffold their writing skill. ​In this semester I would work more in developing this area, in which my MCT told to continue working in improving and developing my assessment strategies and in scaffolding the students. Furthermore, in my lesson plan, I had included the assessment strategies that I will always use to scaffold students learning.

Diagnostic Assessment 

During this teaching practice, I helped my MST to do the diagnostic assessment for the students, in which it was the first time to do this type of assessment as I usually do not get the chance to do it. When I did this assessment with the students, it made me think of the way a student can learn as I notice some of the students know the letter sound but not the name of the letter and the opposite, also some student who usually do not participate in the class and you easily assume that they are low ability can surprise by knowing most of the vocabulary and the letters sound and name. I think doing this assessment really benefit the teacher in knowing the students level and ability in English to be able to scaffold their learning. 

Formative Assessment 

During this teaching practice, I did a formative assessment for the students in most of the lessons. Doing this assessment supported me tracking the students development and improvement through the lesson. Besides, doing this assessment helped to notice the students who need more scaffolding, and in what aspect skill they need scaffolding in. Also, learning about the student's ability will support the teacher in planning and implementing strategies to scaffold the students learning.
